Garden Chair – Free DIY Plans
The first step of the project is to build the sides for the garden bench. Use 2×4 lumber for the legs and armrests. Use a miter saw to make the angle cuts. Smooth the cut edges with sandpaper.
Lay the components on a level surface. Align the edges as shown in the diagram. Add glue to the joints, drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to assemble the sides thoroughly.
Next, we will need to seat frame. Use 2×4 lumber for the components. Cut the 4 supports as shown in the diagram. Use a miter saw to make the 15 degree angle cut.
Lay all the components on a level surface and align the edges flush. Add glue to the joints and make sure the corners are square. Drill pilot holes and insert 3 1/2″ screws to assemble the seat frame.
If want your bench seat to be larger in width or length, this is the time to make adjustments to my plans.
Next, attach the sides to the seat frame of the wood patio bench. Align the edges flush. Drill pilot holes through the frame and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the legs. Leave no gaps between the components. Use a spirit level to check if the seat is horizontal and make sure the corners are square. This step is a little tricky, so it would be a good idea to have another person help you with the bench assembly.
Use 2×4 lumber for the backrest supports. Drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the seat frame of the diy bench. Use a jigsaw to round the exposed corner of the supports.
Use 1×4 slats for the bench seat. Align the first slat flush to the front of the seat. Drill pilot holes and insert 1 5/8″ screws to lock the slats into place tightly. Fit 1/2″ plywood between the slats to create even gaps.
Fit the 1×4 slats to the back of the garden wood chair. Fit 1/2″ plywood spacers between the slats to create even gaps. Drill pilot holes and insert 1 5/8″ screws to lock the slats to the supports tightly.
Use 1×4 lumber for the armrests. Use a jigsaw to make the cuts to the slats, as shown in the diagram. Alternatively, you can get creative with the design of the armrests. Use 1 5/8″ screws to lock the slats into place tightly.
This bench is sturdy, there suitable for big guys or gals. This bench would work great around the firepit or under a cool pavilion.
We recommend you to check if the components are locked into place properly and structure is rigid enough for your garden. Make sure there are no protruding screws or sharp edges. Sand the chair with 150 grit sandpaper until everything is smooth.
PRO TIP: Apply several coats of paint or stain over the components, in order to protect them from decay. Check out the rest of the project to learn more about building diy projects.
